Grievance

Introduction

Definition

"When an employee fell that they have been wronged, for instance unpleasant experience at work, unfair paycheck, unpleasent assignment etc. they can file a grievance with the company they work for. It is basically a complaint by an employee, about his/ her employer, relating to an action taken or which is going to be taken which affects them" (Vulpen, 2024).


Factors of Grievance 

Why grievance procedure is necassary?

Grievance procedure is important because it is an explanation and indication of employee rights and a way of allowing them to raising their concerens within an organization. It gives the opportunity for the employer also to maintain a happy and motivated workforce (Indeed, 2024).


Steps of Grievance Procedure

1. Grievance raised.

2. Investigation.

3. Grievance Meeting.

4. Decision.

5. Appeal.


Stages of Grievance Procedure

Stage 1 - Informal Stage : In this stage the employee raises the grievance to the immediate line manager.

Stage 2 - Formal Stage : The grievance is submitted in writing and there is a time scale for the written reply.

Stage 3 - Appeal Stage : The grievance is considered by the next level management. Hearing has to be held and a decision has to be given within a specific period of time. The employee has the ability to call upon the help of a friend or a trade union representative.

Role of the manager

  • Listens to the facts.
  • Obtains employee's side of story.
  • Asks questions to clarify and summerize the problem.
  • Check the situation with anyone else involved.
  • Consider what action could be taken and what are the comsequences.
  • The aim is to find out an win-win solution.
  • Reply to the employee who has submitted the grievance and record the facts and the decision taken for future reference.

Forms of grievances 

  • Factual - Arises when legitimate needs of employess remain unfulfilled.
  • Imaginary - No valid reason nut because of wrong perception, attitude, information.
  • Disguised - Employee has a reason of dissatifcation which are unknown.

Causes of Grievances

  • Economic reasons.
  • Work envirionment.
  • Supervision.
  • Work group.
  • Facilities ( Taru, 2016).

Conclusion

When an employee has an issue at the workplace, through an effective grievance procedure, the employee can raise the issue and get a solution for that with the concern of the management. This allows to prevent unnecessary conflicts between workforce and management and also it make the bond between management and employees strong.

  • Recognizes the employee - promptly and sympethatically.
  • Way of clearing tension and conflicts.
  • Recognizes the problems in the organization.
  • Reassure the employees do not have to suffer silently.
  • Enhances the ethical amd moral values of the organization.
